Private Networking (MPLS) PDF

Private Networking with MPLS

Mid-size to large organisations are embracing emerging private networking technologies running over a carrier's infrastructure. These networks are typically configured and managed by the carrier according to the client's requirements. The networks may be configured for varying CoS (Class of Service) and are thus suitable to carry data, voice and video services simultaneously.

What is MPLS?

Multi Protocol Label Switching

  • A carrier provided service tool allowing you to integrate multiple Wide Area Network (WAN) access technologies and protocols
  • Resides on the carrier’s network – nothing physical, except for the router, resides at the customer premise

Why MPLS?

  • Ease of Migration from Existing TMC WAN Services
  • Provides a complete Private MPLS-based Network – Separate from the Public Internet
  • Local Access Independent – Mix or Match
  • Ethernet, Frame Relay/ATM, Private Line, etc…
  • Applications Protocol Independent – Solutions for IP and Non-IP Protocols
  • True Quality of Service Support

Who is MPLS for?

  • Mid/Large-sized companies
  • With 3 or more geographically diverse locations
  • With a lot of any-to-any or point-to-any point traffic
  • Intensive Grid Computing applications
  • Planning Convergence projects like voice or video over IP

MPLS Cost Components

  • Local Access (Existing or New)
  • MPLS Port Charge
  • Class of Service Options

– Premium: Voice, Video
– Enhanced: Delay Sensitive Data
– Basic: Best Effort Data (i.e. Email)

  • Optional Router Management

MPLS Considerations

If you have an existing WAN in place, be it point-to-point private line, Frame Relay/ATM or IP, and you are considering an MPLS solution, you should consider installing and running MPLS.
